KUNISADA, "Crossing a Ford"

"Crossing a Ford"
(descriptive title)

prior to 1852

Comment - Country scene of beauties crossing a ford. The left beauty is riding an ox. The right beauty, leading an ox to across a stream, is pausing as she balances a bundle of firewood atop her head. Her kimono is bordered with a multitude of hawk or tonbi kites with indicated short bridle lines. A blossoming plum tree frames the scene above. Probably originally a triptych, the left sheet with the exact title is missing.
