Kite Flying on a Winter Day
(descriptive title)

1976

Comment - The woodblock "Kite Flying on a Winter Day" shows a kite, rising in the air, with a snowy mountain in the background. It maybe Fuji San or a mountain back home in his childhood days. The kite carries a large character for "dragon"  ("ýˆ", Ry¨±). This typical "Kanji kite" ("ji tako", "×Ö„J") is an Edo Kaku, the small brother of an Edo Kite. The leaveless trees underscore the cold winter day. Trees, forests and their structures are a preferred subject for FUJITA Fumio. His nickname was "Forest Painter", as he admitted in a late interview.

FUJITA Fumio is a typical moku hanga artist. He had been working with the woodblock printmaking method and carved and printed himself. His favorite subjects are trees, landscapes and birds and else. The winter trees represent a distictive signature of the artist. FUJITA's prints were published at a certain phase of his career by Watanabe Printers. The Watanabe print-shop was the epitome of the shin hanga art movement.
