'Oni Flying Kites'

1781

Comment - A delicate painting of two oni flying edo kaku kites. Both kites are kanji kites. The characters on the kites are not distinguishable. A bukolic scene with mountains and a lake or the sea, with sailing boats in the far distance. A winding boardwalk leading to a fence and a small hut behind. brushwood, some trees and a large haystack on the left. A hill behind the hut shwos to persons, maybe also flying kites.

On the left, a dominating large oni with small horns on his head, has his mouth wide open, revealing his sharp teeth, bare breast, and a felt loin fur, holds a kite spool in his left hand, and the kite line in his right. The edo kite is flying in moderate wind, as the kite tail show.

A small oni to the right watches his big companion, holding another edo kaku kanji kite.
