Comment - Kabuki scene from the famous "Tale of the Soga Brothers" ("Soga monogatari", "曽我物語"). A large group has gathered for a New Year's Day party at Suketsune's mansion, where the two Soga Brothers arrive to announce their plans to avenge their father's death at the hands of Suketsune years earlier. The crowd reacts with surprise and anger, displaying a variety of expressions. At top center, a man holds up a lion dance costume, grimacing angrily. The yakko or footman at left draws his sword, preparing to defend his master, while the beauty kneeling below looks up with a worried expression. A young boy kneels at her side, holding a blue Edo kite ("Edo tako", "江戸 凧") with a white crest on it.
