Artist ¨C SHIMIZU
Toru (Çåˮ͸Á÷) was born in 1938 in Toyama prefecture. He often
signs his prints with 'TOHORU'. SHIMIZU Toru is a self-taught
Sosaku Hanga
artist, who has mainly concentrated on woodblock prints and
screenprints. His subjects are mainly rooted in family and
country life. Most of his work resembles that of of Katsuhira
Tokushi (1904-1971). Like him, SHIMIZU Toru is also making
his own kind of paper, thus he is able to experiment with
unusual circular paper formats.
Sets of his prints include Snow Country (Yukiguni), 1971, Four
Seasons in Japan (Nihon no shiki), 1973-1974, and Autumn in
Paris (Pari no aki), 1974. Style is detailed and descriptive."
