Comment - "Dagashiya" is a store
selling simple toys and miscellaneous sweets for children. A
series of black and white prints depicting the life of
children in a small town around 1960s, perhaps the time of the
artist's childhood. There is a typical "Yakko kite"
("Yakko-dako", "Å«„J") hanging avove the sweets. The woodblock
and presentation of sujet are more or less set in Western
traditions.
This story is set in rural Japan and is about a grandpa his
grandson Yuuta ('
Grandpa's
Town', 'Ojīchan no machi', 1991). At the beginning of
the story Yuuta and his mother try to get grandpa to move in
with them after the death of grandma because they believe he
is lonely. Little Yuuta goes through a day with his grandpa
and they go to the bath house and he meet a lot of his
grandpa¡¯s friends in their travels. At the end of the story
Yuuta realizes that grandpa is not alone or lonely.
There
are several translations into English, and even a bilingual
one.
