"Tea Stand and Boy with Kite"
or
"Shinagawa ("品川")
Series: "Fine Views of the Eastern Capital
at a Glance"
("Tôto shôkei ichiran", "東都勝計一覧")
1810
Comment - A young lady is helping a
samurai to dress at a tea stand on the beach of Shinagawa. The
blue sign on the stand is named "e no ju" ("エの住") in white
kanji characters, meaning "home cooking" or "plain fare". Next
to the tea stand, a boy is holding up a blue Edo kite
("Edo-tako", "江戸凧") with a white kanji character ("Kanji
kite", "ji tako", "字凧"). The kanji character reads "seed"
("種", "tane"). May be an allusion to a planting festival. The
boy is trying to lift the Edo, the long tail ropes of the kite
laid out on the ground. Another boy wants to take up the kite
line to help starting.
