Artist – SHIMIZU Kahei (清水嘉兵衛 or 清水嘉兵工) was a real estate wholesaler in the Meiji period. During the Meiji period, he operated as real estate wholesaler and editor at 2 Nabecho, Kanda Ward. Among others, he published Utagawa Kunitoshi and Utagawa Hiroshige III. He was well known for the edition of the first overall 12 volume collection of YAMAMURA Seisuke's detailed Maps of Japan (Dai Nihon setsu ezu tōgoku, 大日本切絵図 東国". It is not unknown, that editors are also artists and have produced ukiyo-e.

There are no ukiyo-e on the market that can be clearly attributed to SHIMIZU Kahei as an artist. It is possible that the prints attributed to SHIMIZU merely reflect his role as publisher.
