Artist – SADAHIRO
(1838 - 1918) was born as Hirokane
( (広兼 / 廣兼),
later changed to
Mitani Matasaburô (三谷又三郎). To distinguish him from Sadahiro
(I), it is internationally accepted to name him SADAHIRO-II.
SADAHIRO-II (二代貞廣) also known as Hirosada-II (二代廣貞), was a
designer of ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock prints in Osaka.
SADAHIRO is said to have studied under Kunisada Utagawa and
used the name Sadahiro Utagawa (貞廣 歌川). SADAHIRO Utagawa may be identical
with Hirosada Utagawa.
After his apprenticeship in Edo, he went to Osaka. His
style is typical for the 'Osaka School' of printmakers with
mostly kabuki actor scenes and portraits. In Osaka he became
student of Konishi Hirosada (小西 廣貞) (Hirosada-I, 廣貞), and was
trained in Maruyama-style painting, but turned toward
printmaking. He also had been an illustrator for Asahi Shimbun
(a publishing firm founded in Osaka in 1879). SADAHIRO
assumed the name “Hirosada” ("廣貞") in 1853, when his teacher
ceased designing prints. In the summer of 1864, Hirosada-I
died and his student changed his name for a second time, from
“Hirosada” (廣貞) to “SADAHIRO”
(貞廣).
Personal life - SADAHIRO
had been born on an island belonging to the city of Osaka. His birth name
was Hirokane (広兼 / 廣兼).
Hirokane's
father was a shamisen virtuoso named Akira
sumeragi-tei (昭皇亭). SADAHIRO
died at the age of 71 and was entombed in the Shimodera-machi
Komyo-ji crypt. His posthumous name was Takayo Sadahiro (高誉貞広).
