KUNISATO (Utagawa Kunisato, 歌川 国郷) (birthdate unknown, died
1858) was an ukiyo-e printmaker of the Utagawa school, active
during the Edo era.
In the early 1840ies
he entered the school of Kunisada (I). His first woodcuts had
been signed as "Toyokuni" from 1843 onward. There are proven
signatures on bijin-ga (美人画) from 1847 and kabuki-e from
1853. He depicted pictures of famous paintings, toys, sumo
wrestling, and illustrated books.
Personal life
- There is only sparse information on KUNISATO available. His childhood name was
Masajirō (政次郎). KUNISATO was born to a
cofectioner and owner of a pastry shop in Edo in the Tategawa
ward of Honjo, they moved to Owari-Cho of the neighbouring
ward. About that time he entered Kunisada I's workshop and
seemed to be adopted by him. KUNISATO died at an early age in
1958.
Aliases
- KUNISATO's childhood
name was Masajirō
(政次郎). Most of his works have been signed as "Kunisato-ga" ("国郷
画") or Kunisato-hitsu
("国郷 筆") . During the course of his short career he
used his artists name with several epithets like Toyokuni monjin
Kunisato-ga (豊国門人国郷画), Toyokuni monjin Kunisato-ga hitsu
(豊国門人国郷画筆), Toyokuni monjin Tatekawa Kunisato-ga (豊国門人竪川国郷画),
Ritsusenai Kunisato-ga and several more seldom used
combinations.
